A tooth implant is a titanium insert permanently fixed into your jawbone. It fuses with the surrounding bone and is eventually topped with a porcelain tooth (crown) to replace any natural teeth lost through extraction. Implants are a semi-permanent solution for missing teeth or teeth that are damaged. If you feel self-conscious about gaps in your teeth or are struggling to eat or drink, then dental implants could be the right treatment for you.
How It Works
Before we proceed with a dental implant, it is important to assess whether this is the best option for you and what you can expect. Below are some crucial points to take into consideration:
- Initial Consultation: This will be an informal conversation about the reasons you are seeking dental implants and what you are hoping to achieve. This conversation gives us a general picture of any past dental issues and can help us advise you on your options and approximate costs.
- Treatment Plan & Clinical Assessment: Every treatment plan is unique, meaning we must undergo a clinical assessment to determine if dental implants are suitable for you. This process can include a physical examination as well as X-rays. You need to have sufficient enough bone to support the implant, otherwise a bone graft or sinus lift might be necessary before treatment.
- The Implant Procedure: This is a straightforward, relatively pain-free procedure performed under general anaesthetic or, if you are anxious, with sedation. It involves a small incision into the gum and a drill into the jawbone to fit the implant. Afterwards, your gum might be closed with stitches; however, this is not always necessary.
- Fitting Replacement Teeth:In most instances, you need to allow time for the implant to bond with the surrounding bone before replacement teeth are fitted. We will create porcelain crowns that resemble your surrounding teeth, giving you a natural smile.
- Aftercare: We will schedule follow-up appointments with you to check your dental implants are both secure and healthy.

Periodontic Treatment
Gum disease can often cause swollen gums and bleeding after brushing. Having regular check-ups can stop gum disease in its tracks before it becomes more problematic. Untreated gum disease can spread to the bone and may require one or multiple teeth to be extracted. If so, a dental implant could be a suitable solution. However, you will need to ensure your gum disease is fully treated before any implants are fitted.
